Stafford Barmy Army Tourists v Rest of England Barmy Army

Riverway 14th August 2009

2 p.m.

Arrive for pre match scoops from 12 noon.

This is the eighth year we have held this game and I know the club are very proud to once again be the hosts.

As usual it’s Stafford’s Barmy Army Tourists v The rest of England’s Barmy Army.
The score stands at 4-3 in the series to the visitors and I know the Stafford boys will be looking to regain the Avro trophy and level it up. We had our best game yet last year with the rest of England’s Barmy Army winning on the penultimate ball.

There will be food and a bbq available on the day and evening entertainment provided by Spooner. We are looking into doing something a little bit different this year and working on a few ideas. Gaz Taylor will hopefully be doing a small sports auction.

Last year we raised £1552 for Leukaemia research on the day a great effort and once again will raising funds for them who are the Barmy Army’s main charity. Click here for  a sponsorship form for all those players and supporters attending so please do your best to get some cash in.
Directions are on the form and those wanting accommodation there are Premier Inns and Holiday Inns in Stafford on junctions 13 and 14 of the M6. Or the closest to the ground is the Abbey Hotel 01785 258531
www.abbeyhotelstafford.co.uk

As I stated before there is also a new Travelodge worth looking into Stafford Central which is 5 mins walk from the ground even closer than the abbey.

This is always a great day, well supported and a great reunion for everyone. Lets make this 8th one even better in a special summer where we hopefully regain the ashes.

Everyone is welcome anyone wanting to play or just be a spectator drink and heckle!

NSSCPC League Leading Wicket Taker - Sean Connolly

Stafford’s young side were disappointing with the bat once again after losing at home to Blythe in this North Staffs and South Cheshire Division one clash by 6 wickets. The defeat sees them slip back into the bottom 2 at the half way point of the season. Stafford batted first at riverway and Peter Finch 4-24 made the most of the helpful seamers conditions to see the home side all out for 70. Stafford worked hard in the field taking 4 wickets but simply did not have enough runs on the board as Martin Bailey’s 40 not out saw Blythe through. Sean Connolly picking up 3-20 and is now the leading wicket taker in the league at this point. Stafford travel to Norton this Saturday hoping to get back on track.

In memory of Libby Moss

June 27th, 2009

libby.jpg

A lot of members will remember Libby growing up at the club and it was suggested that a memorial would be appropriate. It was after a conversation with friends of Libby’s family that the idea of a memorial seat was raised as a way of remembering her at the club. The cricket section has decided a memorial bench would be a fitting tribute and we would therefore welcome any donations to the fund to commision one.

To that end I have already started to make enquiries to find a suitable bench and have started to collect donations. I am hoping to place the order over the next couple of weeks so please give your support!

After last weeks impressive victory Stafford’s young side showed their inconsistency by having a disappointing weekend losing in their league trip to Rode Park on Saturday and bowing out of the Talbot Cup on Sunday at Checkley. Stafford performed well in the field on Saturday restricting Rode Park to 165 all out thanks to Sean Connolly’s 4-47 and leg spinner Shawn Hunt’s 3-19. The batting was another story as they crashed to 85 all out in reply with only professional Robert Hislop 29 getting in. Richard Irons 4-10 did the main damage. Sunday saw an improved performance in a close finish with Checkley. The home side hit 249-6 off their 45 overs with Noel Hunt impressing with 4-37. Stafford fell just 26 runs short as Mark Foster 49, brother Dave Foster 52 and Shawn Hunt 30 contributed well with the bat. Stafford are back in league action this Saturday at home to Blythe 1-30pm start at Riverway.

Ash Lunn in fine form - unbeaten on 59

Stafford faced bottom side Meir Heath at Riverway on Saturday and a solid team performance saw a vital 8 wicket victory to take them out of the relegation places in Division one of the North Staffs and South Cheshire League. Stafford asked the visitors to bat first and Oliver Stark bowled well early on taking 4-26 and Sean Connolly picked 3-16 in the middle order as Meir were dismissed for 134. Stafford made light work of their run chase losing only 2 wickets closing on 138 for 2. Opener Ashley Lunn continued his fine form to see his side through with an unbeaten 59. He was ably supported by fellow opener Ryan Fox 22 as they put on 52 for the first wicket. Professional Robert Hislop then hit 32 batting at three as Stafford picked up 20 points. Sunday saw disappointment in the twenty-20 competition at Riverway as Oulton were the team to progress from the group playing at Stafford. Stafford travel to Rode Park this Saturday in the league and travel to Checkley in the Talbot Cup on Sunday.
